The SCBWI acts as a network for the exchange of knowledge between writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and others involved with literature for young people. There are currently more than 19,000 members worldwide, in over 70 regions, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.

Critique Group Information PDF Print E-mail

One of the goals of SCBWI is to bring writers and illustrators in the children's book field together.

A critique group is a group of writers who are willing to encourage each other and provide regular help to each other. A critique group takes committment:

  • to meet a deadline for submission,
  • to promise to critique the writing not the person

It only takes a few writers and/or illustrators willing to read and share their work and ready to exchange opinions to form a cohesive critique group. Groups are organized in as many ways as there are people. SCBWI Carolinas has many critique groups. Check the listings under North Carolinas and South Carolinas and see if there are any organized groups open and available in your area.

  • If there is a group, contact the name at the email address listed and request the opportunity to visit the group.
  • If there isn't a group, use the SCBWI-C listserv to ask if there are any SCBWI members in your area to start a group.
  • If you need to start your own, logon to www.scbwi.org, Select ¬Publications. Starting Your Own Critique Group
  • If you start a group remember to contact SCBWICarolinas to list your group on the chapter website.
  • For updates or changes to critique group listings please contact SCBWICarolinas.
