combining writing and photography 3 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Hi all,

I'd like to think of ways to combine writing with photography so as to capitalize on both my passions/hobbies/interests, maybe even come up with some sort of niche writing that involves photography.

So far, all I can think of are fairly pat, standard kinds of things like non-fiction books about whatever I'm photographing, or only slightly more interesting, non-fiction book about my dog (following him through therapy training or something like that).

Can anyone think of any different, inventive, niche, interesting things to combine the two?

Thanks!

Kara

Kara,
I recently attended a Founder's Workshop presented by Highlights for Children/Boyds Mills Press on Nature Journaling. There was a photography component to it, and I found out that the digital photos I've been taking and falling in love with, aren't up to publishing standards. The digital camera has to be able to save in TIF, but more preferred are RAW files. So I'm busy looking at getting a new digital SLR camera with lenses I can change so I can do macro work to get close ups of bugs and wild flowers and a good zoom lens so I can get birds off in the trees. What kind of camera do you have?

Hi Joy,

I have a Nikon D300 which I just recently purchased. It has the options of saving in different formats - TIF and RAW are among them. I currently use just jpeg, as I did when using my older camera, a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D. But I'm pretty sure that that also had the option of saving in any format you choose. I think most do.

I have not had a book published with my photos in it except for my portfolio on shutterfly (those books you can make yourself and most people make vacation albums, wedding albums, etc. from them). I do sell my art online on a website I created and there is no problem with jpegs at a higher print resolution (like over 300).

But I didn't know that photos need to be in RAW or TIFF to be 'book publishable'. I think my photo software also converts formats. Pretty sure many standard photo editing softwares like Adobe would also.
