Read resolution and revisit before you trust an image

Resolution is not one number. A satellite image carries several, and they do different jobs. Spatial resolution, usually given as ground sample distance in meters, tells you how wide one pixel is on the ground. A 10 meter pixel cannot show a rice paddy bund; a 30 meter pixel cannot show a single house. Radiometric resolution describes how many brightness levels each pixel records, which decides whether you can separate a wet field from a dry one in the same scene. Temporal resolution is revisit: how many days pass before the same satellite passes over the same spot again.

Revisit is where illustrators get caught. A satellite does not photograph a place on demand. Landsat repeats roughly every 16 days, Sentinel-2 roughly every five days at the equator with its two satellites, and clouds decide the rest. Monsoon Asia is cloudy for months. If your spread shows a flooded delta in August, the image you find may be from a clear window in a different week, and the water may have moved. That is not a flaw in the data; it is the data telling you what it can and cannot support.

A practical check before drawing: note the acquisition date, the sensor name, and the ground sample distance. If the date falls outside the season your text describes, either change the text or change the image. How do I choose satellite imagery for a project in Asia?

Start from the smallest thing a child will point at. If the spread shows a city growing, you need enough resolution to see the built edge, and 10 to 30 meters is usually enough when you draw at spread scale. If it shows a single irrigation canal, you need finer data, often from a commercial provider, and that changes your budget and your licensing conversation.

Then match the season. A monsoon flood, a harvest, a dust season, and a snow line are all seasonal events. Search by date range, not by "best image." Most free browsers let you set a start and end date and a cloud cover ceiling; use a low ceiling first, then relax it if nothing appears.

Then check the license. Open data from Landsat and Sentinel-2 comes with few restrictions, but attribution rules still apply, and a publisher will ask. National missions vary: some release imagery freely, some restrict it, some sell it. Read the terms before you build a spread around an image you cannot credit properly.

Finally, decide what the image is for. A satellite image can be a reference for shape, a texture source for a painted landscape, or a small inset with a caption. Each use has a different tolerance for cloud, haze, and color. A reference for shape forgives haze. A printed inset does not.

Where can I download free satellite images of Asia?

Three routes cover most needs.

The first is the open global archives. Landsat, run by the United States Geological Survey and NASA, offers decades of imagery at 30 meters, with free download through the USGS EarthExplorer interface. Sentinel-2, from the European Union's Copernicus programme, offers 10 meter imagery with a shorter revisit. Both cover Asia completely and both are free.

The second is national and regional portals. Japan, India, South Korea, Thailand, and China each operate Earth observation programmes with their own distribution channels, and access rules differ from country to country. Some portals require registration; some publish only processed products rather than raw scenes.

The third is cloud-based viewers. QGIS, a free desktop GIS, opens most of these files directly, and Google Earth Engine lets you preview and export imagery without downloading the full archive. For an illustrator, the preview is often enough: you need to see the shape of a coastline, not to run an analysis.

One caution. A browser preview is not the same as the data. Colors are stretched, contrast is adjusted, and what looks like a green field may be a rendering choice. If color matters to your spread, open the actual bands.

Which Asian countries fly their own Earth observation satellites?

Several do, and the list is longer than most illustrators expect. Japan operates a long line of Earth observation missions, including the Himawari series for weather, which returns images of the full disk every ten minutes and is genuinely useful for showing a typhoon as a shape. India runs a large national remote sensing programme with satellites at several resolutions. South Korea, Thailand, and China each operate their own Earth observation satellites as well.

For an illustrator, the practical consequence is variety. A Japanese weather satellite gives you cloud patterns. An Indian resource satellite gives you land cover. A Thai or Korean mission may give you regional coverage tuned to local conditions. None of these replace Landsat or Sentinel-2 for a general reference, but they fill gaps, and they give you a reason to name a specific sensor in a caption rather than writing "a satellite."

If your spread names a country's programme, check the current mission list before you go to press. Satellite fleets change, and a mission that was active two years ago may have been retired.

What free archives offer a children's nonfiction spread

A spread is a small canvas with a big job. It has to be accurate enough to survive a curious eight-year-old and simple enough to read at arm's length. Free archives serve that job well, with three caveats.

First, resolution sets the floor. At 10 meters, a river reads clearly, a road reads as a line, and a village reads as a texture. At 30 meters, the river still reads, the road may not, and the village becomes a smudge. Draw at the scale the data supports.

Second, revisit sets the season. If your text says "during the flood," your image should come from the flood. If no clear image exists for that week, say so in the caption, or shift the scene to a month the archive can support.

Third, ground truth sets the confidence. A satellite image shows reflectance, not meaning. Someone has to go to the field and confirm that the green patch is rice and not sugarcane. That confirmation is what turns a picture into a fact, and it is worth a line in your back matter.

For a children's book, the caption does most of the teaching. Name the sensor, give the date, and say what the colors mean. A reader who learns that a satellite passes over the same place every few days has learned something real about how the planet is watched.

A short workflow

Pick the feature. Set a date range and a cloud ceiling. Choose the coarsest resolution that still shows the feature. Download or preview. Check the license. Write the caption with sensor, date, and what the colors show. Keep the raw file with your notes, because an editor will ask where the image came from, and "a satellite" is not an answer.

That sequence takes an afternoon the first time and twenty minutes after that. It also protects you: an image you can date and name is an image you can defend.
